The Need To Use PC and Internet Technology

Africans Need To Open Up To Technology

Too many times I see people in 21st century African societies clinging to old ways of doing things – almost as if scared of the new and sometimes radically different ALTERNATIVE ways now made possible by advancements in technology.

A perfect example of this is readily seen in the prevailing attitude towards the use of PC/Internet technology. I have travelled to a number of African states and cities in my own country, Nigeria. The problem persists: People have a seeming aversion for putting these powerful and cost-effective tools to productive use.

Don’t get me wrong. We are using these tools. BUT it is what we use them for most times, that I quarrel with. Forget the 419 Yahoo! mail scam artists. Theirs is a fallout of THIS. Information Technology is for a THINKING society’s use in creating and developing value adding resources that benefit others. What I see is that many of us just love to purchase, own and SHOW OFF our IT tools, instead of exploiting them to move to the next level.

Large majorities of our people remain in awe of Internet technology, rather than seeing it as the greatest leveler of all times, that TODAY makes it possible for any willing person from any part of the world to exert a felt impact on people and places worldwide, without physically getting there!

Why Don’t Our Schools Use PC/Internet Technology Well?

Why for instance is it that we do not have a proliferation of educational institutions using the Internet to cheaply pass on knowledge to their learners in a way that will allow the latter to pay LESS tuition – if at all any?

No, I do not accept that what schools and some universities are currently doing by having computer centers equates to what I am describing here. What I am after is the ACTIVE use of the PC and Internet technology as a means of more effectively delivering knowledge to learners within and beyond the local environment.

THAT is NOT happening in our institutions currently. Yes, they conduct computer and Internet appreciation classes, BUT that’s where it ends. There is little or no effort put into using these tools to CREATE and INNOVATE. That’s why our educational institutions cannot boast of having website (if they have a web site that is!) visitors that come regularly to browse and download useful learning materials developed by their OWN teachers/pupils or lecturers/students.

Many times it is the members of OUR institutions that go online to websites of OTHER institutions in developed societies to search for and download information about our own societies! Even if they were to be patriotic and tried to find web sites run by Africans living in Africa, their chances of finding the exact (and up to date) information they want would be slim.

Africans In Diaspora Use The Internet Better – & MORE

Frequently, when we do have Africans maintaining reasonably up to date web sites, a little checking soon reveals the site is run by Africans based in developed societies. Yet, the truth is that it is NOT that our local environment makes it difficult to use PC/Internet technology this way. My personal experiences confirm this.

It is simply a matter of some kind of mental “barrier” or limit we have imposed on ourselves and which needs to be broken through by each of us if we are to stand any chance at all of taking advantage of these tools to improve the lives of our people.

SOME EXCEPTIONS: By the way, there are exceptions to this general problem in Africa that I complain about here. If you try visiting web sites maintained by universities in African countries like South Africa, Egypt, and a few others, you will almost think they are not based here.

ANY Individual Can Use The Internet Profitably

As a self-employed person in a society where the sales/marketing costs can be quite high and erratic, I have successfully established and maintained a considerably high profile web presence in line with my business vision.

My email subscriber database has grown as more people request some free offers provided in my articles. Note that they do this of their own free will and that suggests they not only found my article interesting enough to be useful, but they were also impressed enough to go one step further to request copies of additional information that I offered in the body of my writings.

If I can do the foregoing, with the limited resources I have, then ANY African individual or organisation can achieve similar, if not better, results.

It Actually Costs VERY VERY Little To Maintain A Web site

And to think that it can cost less than $50 naira equivalent to pay for domain name registration and hosting for a simple site. Add to this the fact that various web site design tools now allow even a novice build and maintain a decent web site presence. One wonders then what many of us are waiting for?

Discovering the Benefits of 3G Internet Technology

It is a statement of fact that the 3G Internet technology has proven to be a very fast means of data communication. This wireless technology is not limited by time or space, and it has really helped to engender efficient data transfer over 3G devices like a 3G modem and a 3G phone. Here, you would learn more about the benefits of this technology.

In past times, cell phones had 2G or GPRS/EDGE technology for data transfer. Because its transfer rate was very slow, most users were always frustrated as regards the issue of connectivity. Today, the introduction of 3G networks has made data transfer to become possible at faster speeds.

The Third-Generation Internet technology helps to enhance the functionality of PCs and certain brands of handsets. With a 3G modem, you can access the net with ease by just plugging in your data card into a USB port on your computer. The technology is all about data transfer at a very high speed that makes your online activities to be full of fun and excitement. Now, you can easily download movies, music, and other types of files within a short moment. Activities that once took several minutes on the GPRS/EDGE networks would take few seconds to complete.

Furthermore, you would agree that an attempt to watch a video clip on a 2G network is highly nauseating. If you have a 3G modem, you can make a video call or conferencing on your PC; you will also enjoy YouTube videos or any other video clips you may find on the net. Are you a computer games enthusiast? You need the 3G technology to have fun with your favourite online games.

In effect, you need to have a 3G-enabled cell phone; better still, you should opt for a 3G modem to be used with your netbook, notebook or laptop. Here are some other things you can do with the device anywhere you go:

• Online shopping
• Instant Internet banking
• Breaking news updates
• Monitoring of the stock market
• Viewing of TV shows or the latest movies on TV stations.

Internet Technology

Internet technology has brought about a revolution in the mindset of people from all categories of life, and is now set to take over the business and trading communities as well!

Just take a look at some of the ways in which Internet technology has brought about a change for the better (though some would not agree with me!)–

(a) Advertisements centered round cellphones claim to be connecting people around the world. And it is true! Landline phone services have been relegated to the past–it is Voice over Internet Protocol now (VoIP). You save on costs and save on time!

(b) What about shopping? This is the greatest boon offered by the World Web. Be it fitness gear, clothes, books, DVDs, MP3 digital player–anything, everything can be purchased online from the comfort of your own home. You pay online, and everything is shipped out to your residence.

(c) Postal services and courier services are no longer in as much demand as they used to be in the past. The electronic mail service or e-mail has taken over!

(d) Internet technology has intruded into your personal life too! There are web sites specially meant for fixing up dates. You can check out the person of your choice before actually meeting him/her. No more unnecessary expenditure on soft drinks or food, and no more heartaches!

(e) Cookbooks are no longer necessary to figure out the menu for any special occasion. Cooking web sites can provide you with delicious recipes–as many as you want.
(f) The biggest headache for you and me is payment of bills before the respective due dates! Automatic payments are possible online. They could be related to loans, utility bills, insurance bills or credit cards.

There are many, many more ways in which the Net has revolutionized the world, but it would be too exhausting to list them all out here! So a few examples should suffice to give you a general idea about technological advances.

The latest “victim” of Internet technology is the trading world! It has introduced trading software. Before going in for any sort of trading software, it is advisable to check out its features–

(a) There should be a facility to allow simultaneous opening of different windows. You can then compare various exchanges or markets online. You can even work on all of the windows at the same time.

(b) It should facilitate the examination of various kinds of data. You should be able to compare these items at one go.

(c) There should be automatic evaluation of well-known market indicators. These are Fibonacci series, moving average and stochastic. The indicators should be so designed that they can be easily switched from one to another. For instance, going from a 5-day stochastic to a 9-day stochastic.

(d) Lastly, you should be able to track your profits and losses via regular updates on closing prices in the market.

Now, why has Internet technology come up with trading software and why would you need it?

Whether you are a broker or a shareholder, you are concerned with assets and securities–you trade them. You are also interested in how much you might have gained in the way of profits, or what are the losses you have incurred with unwise investments. All this is difficult to do manually, hence the entrance of trading software.

This sort of software is meant to be an electronic advisor for decision-making related to trading activities. Analysis of market trends is possible, enabling you to select the company/institution you would like to place your money on. A word of caution–all trading softwares do not necessarily function in the same way; so go for the best one that fits in with your needs.

But despite all the precautions you take, you are always at risk because prices never remain steady. And that is why the trading world was the domain of only elite businessmen in yesteryears. They knew how to play the game and how to benefit from it! Today, the whole picture has changed, thanks to Internet technology!

Old or young, newcomer or professional–all are welcome to try their luck! Sometimes, it may take just under an hour to win a huge sum or lose a large amount! Use the trading software so generously given by Internet technology to make wise decisions. You will only stand to benefit with a cautious approach!

Present View of Internet Technology

It is hard to imagine something that is so young, relatively speaking, that already plays such an important role in our lives. Internet Technology is now such a firm part of our daily lives that if it were to vanished one day, it could cripple a nation if not the world. Governments use computers and the internet to run cities. Companies use the same to run their offices. Banks depend on them for financial transactions. To give you an idea of how important it has become, in 1999, there was a panic of what would happen to all of the computer systems on the internet when the clock struck 2000 that New Years Eve. Some people were preparing for the worst, a total failure. Some withdrew money while others stocked up on food. Others might have stocked up on fuels like gas and wood, just in case. After it was all over and the year 2000 kicked off, no problems were reported at all. Internet Technology is here to stay.

Like everything there are pros and cons to internet technology. People are becoming more secluded. Doctors are saying it is causing obesity. It also has another side, a much brighter one and it offers so much more. We use the technology, not only to help others, but for things like entertainment. The internet keeps the cost of many things low so people can save money yearly by shopping online. Two of the biggest uses would be communication and getting your daily news. It was not long ago the first email was sent. Now it is one of the biggest parts of our lives when it comes to communication. Electronic communication is growing at its own pace and has many different faces. Not only do you check your email accounts daily, you probably check your social networking messages, private messages from sites (or p.m.s), instant messages, and also your cell phones text messages.

The costs associated with internet technology has drop dramatically, which is a good thing. Laptop computers can be purchased for 10 percent of what they cost just a decade ago. This allows more and more people, in different financial situations, to be able to have fulltime access to the internet and the knowledge that comes with it. Experts predict it is going to get even more affordable. There are movements to bring the internet into a free zone. Believing that it is now such an essential part of our lives that no one should go without.

One of the most recent advances in internet technology is the ability to access the worldwide web via our cellular phones. Cellular phones are themselves a relatively new technology and they already have been transformed into mini computers. Being able to do just about anything that a computer with access to an internet can do. Experts predict that the newest generation of children will not own a regular computer. They will not want to be bothered by a ‘big’ clumpy laptop, that they will prefer to use their cell phones instead.

To think the Iron age lasted thousands of years and brought us cars, we are just a few decades into the internet technology era. We can only imagine where it could be in the next few hundred years.

The Growth of Internet Technology

The world has become a ‘global village’. This oxymoron is because of the immense contribution of the internet and the way it has been able to successfully bring the globe together in a village like community. The term ‘Global Village’ was coined in 1970s by the great visionary Marshall McLuhan. This has been converted into reality by the growth of the internet technology and its continuing trend. Before delving deep into the stats, one can easily count the benefits of the internet in the field of transportation, communication, entertainment, medical science, education, research and development, logistics and many more. The growth of internet has been exemplary over the last couple of decades. It is already documented and speaks volume about how this technology has penetrated into the lives of the masses all over the globe.

It is unbelievable and surprising that the internet had just around 16 million users (about 0.4 percent of the global population) in 1995. Today, it has around 2,267 million users (December 2011). This is approximately 32.7 percent of the global population (source: IDC, International World Stats). In a span of 17 years the internet technology has grown by leaps and bounds. Off course, the credit for this impetus should also be given to the people and other emerging technologies that has consistently made internet more accessible, beneficial and omnipresent.

In common parlance, Internet refers to a global interconnection of networks owned and operated by industries, academia, government and other private entities. It is meant for the transition of knowledge, information and a viable means of communication. While racing with time, it has so far achieved and surpassed all the objectives of its authors and concept builders.

Even the flora and fauna has been impacted upon by the internet technology. If you are around 35 years of age then you can easily recollect the vintage years of this technology and the way by which it grew. The consolidation of the internet as a global platform has changed the way of communication and international and domestic business activities. Due to this technology, communication has no distance related barriers. It has integrated the whole world with a single thread and gave true meaning to the words ‘global village’. It would not be an exaggeration if you call internet technology as the best and universal means of communication for billions of people.

The credit for this rapid growth of the internet technology should also go to the development of different protocols such as http and https, TCP/IP and IPv4 that may become IPv6 very soon. Moreover, Ethernet, routers, routing protocols, the development of the document object model, domain name resolution (DNS) and security measures like firewalls and fiber optics are some of the technological aspects that you should include in the list of the factors that has played a pivotal role in making internet technology such a big success.

One more thing that you can’t afford to omit in this discussion is the role played by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). W3C has delivered all important interoperable technologies in the form of tools, guidelines, specifications and software to help the Web grow to its full potential. As a forum for information, communication, commerce and collective learning, W3C has innumerable contributions to the growth of the internet technology.

What is more intriguing and encouraging about the internet technology is its consistent growth over the years. Every day we come across about new products and services using this technology. It has given concrete platform for many industries to grow and benefit people. The latest buzz in the market related to the internet technology is the smartphone. Most recently, it has revitalized the complacent telecommunication and entertainment industry with fresh concepts and given vigor to achieve more and more in the coming years. So there is no harm in saying that the growing trend of internet technology that began a couple of decades ago is likely to continue and bring something new and improved.
